Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi is responsible for securing $2 billion for child care and $2.1 billion for Head Start and Early Start.
Working parents, staff and children from Holy Family Day Home and Parent Voices joined together on February 28th in the new second floor multi-purpose room at Holy Family Day Home to pay tribute to Madame Speaker.
Speaker Pelosi was delighted to tour the new facility, visiting classrooms and chatting with children along the way. Following the tour, the Speaker met privately with parents who rely on publicly funded child care, to hear firsthand the challenges they face in these uncertain economic times. Cyn Bivens, a single mother whose two year old daughter attends the preschool, thanked Speaker Pelosi “for standing up for those of us who need to go to work everyday and who depend upon child care centers like the Day Home, where we know our kids are safe and getting the basics for a good education and a chance for future opportunities that we didn’t have.”
On December 4, 2008 the Joan Crotty Children’s Library was officially opened with the cheers and well wishes of board members, community leaders and special friends.
Special guests Barney, Michael and Joann Crotty, along with children’s librarian Nancy Lucero, cut the ribbon. Special acknowledgement was given to Moroso Construction who volunteered their manpower, as well as all materials, pro bono. Day Home Staff member Michelle Hall was the coordinator of the library project from start to finish.
Plumpjack catered a complete Thanksgiving luncheon at the Day Home for 171 children, 50 staff members and 22 volunteers. It was a festive occasion for everyone, including twenty-two volunteers from Starbucks, CitiSuites and Genentech who lovingly tended to the needs of each child.
Twenty five young mothers enjoyed socializing and discussing child rearing at a community breakfast held at the Day Home in October. The Guest speaker, who is the Director of the Play Group and a television personality, Lonna Corder, spoke to the parents about how to raise successful and well adjusted children.

Spectacular weather, a sold out crowd, a lovely venue in the Presidio, wonderful food by Wolfgang Puck and exciting auction gifts… created a memorable Spring Gala. Honorary Chairs Hilary Newsom Callan and Jennifer Siebel Newsom welcomed guests and gave high praise to the work being accomplished at the Day Home. The evening’s proceeds went directly to support early educational child care programs and comprehensive services for families.
Congratulations to all the volunteers for their outstanding leadership.
