2015 Letters from Home

A word from Sister Marianne Smith, SHF

Sister Marianne Smith

Dear Friends of the Day Home,

It was with prayerful thought this summer that I decided to retire from my work at Holy Family Day Home. It is hard to express in words the joy I have experienced over the many years watching children graduate onto kindergarten with their proud parents filled with hope for a bright future.

As I head to the Sisters’ main residence in Fremont, I’ll remember the spirited faces of each of the 154 children every Christmas as Santa Claus visited, the anxious toddler on his first day, and the joyful laughter resounding from the playground. The caring and skillful teachers and staff have done so well over the years in keeping alive the spirit of our Day Home’s mission started by the Sisters of the Holy Family 115 years ago.

Though I have left my day-to-day responsibilities, the Day Home will always hold a special place in my heart and I will forever be a member of this loving family. I want to especially thank so many of you who have generously donated in my honor and to the scholarship fund in my name over the years. Seeking out and advocating for those who need us the most has always been a very important mission to me and the Sisters of the Holy Family. Carrying out this work at the Day Home so that our young vulnerable children can learn and grow to become productive and compassionate adults has been most fulfilling.

Saying goodbye to all the children certainly was not easy after so many years; however, it is a comfort knowing that the new Day Home Endowment will ensure a sound financial future and continue the legacy of the Sisters for years to come.

It is my hope that you will consider making a special additional gift to the Day Home Endowment this year, in addition to your annual gift. It is essential to continue these necessary services to help educate children, empower families, and enrich the community.

I look forward to visiting every chance I get, and I hope to see everyone at one of the Day Home’s upcoming events, where we will celebrate the powerful work that happens at 299 Dolores Street each school day.

Warmest appreciation,

dynamic duoIntroducing Our Day Home Endowment

Here Today… Here For Good

Any financial planner will tell you that saving for the future is a good thing to do. That is especially true if your mission is to provide the best early childhood education and family services in San Francisco with the ultimate goal of ending the cycle of poverty.

Recently, our Board of Directors approved the establishment of the Day Home Endowment and challenged themselves and staff to work to secure our future by building this important fund. And, if there’s one thing true about the Day Home family (and, that includes you!), it’s that we always rise to a challenge.

Undoubtedly, your annual support is vital in supporting our daily operational expenses. However, a special gift to the Day Home Endowment will give you the satisfaction of knowing that San Francisco children and families will benefit from your vision and generosity now and far into the future.

What exactly is an endowment?

An endowment is a permanent reserve of funds that provides reliable annual support to the Day Home. It is much like the saving a family does through a retirement plan or a savings account except that an endowment lasts forever. This is how it works…

  • Picture making a gift of $25,000 to the Day Home Endowment.
  • We will add your endowment gift to the fund and safely invest it.
  • We then use the gains from the investment to help cover annual program expenses or another special purpose, such as a capital project. Your gift remains intact within the endowment so that we can use the gains from the investment in subsequent years.
  • Because your gift is a permanent investment, the overall principle in the endowment will not be used and will likely grow over the years, yielding increased gains.

Did you know you can also put the Day Home in your will and become a part of the Virginia Fair Legacy Society?

These gifts will be invested in our Day Home Endowment, as well. For more information or questions, contact Ken McKinney, Director of Development, at 415-565-0504, Ext. 201 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
