HFDH offers the option for you to donate online by using a MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express credit cards. Below are some frequently asked questions donors have about donating via the Internet with their credit card. If your question is not below, always feel free to contact the Development Department for more information. We take the security and safety of Internet transactions very seriously.

Is it safe to provide my credit card account numbers over the Internet?

We believe that it is safe and we are confident that the systems we have in place are at or above industry standards for Internet security. Your payment information, including credit card handling, is transferred through a secure server using the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol. This allows your browser to encode any data it sends to our server, so that even if someone intercepted your information as it traveled across the Internet they wouldn't be able to read it.

Network Solutions, a verified and trusted third party SSL certificate authority, issued our "server certificate." This certificate verifies that you are really sending your credit card number to HFDH, and not someone pretending to be us. This is standard SSL practice.

I think that's okay, but I'm still not 100% convinced.

We understand that you may still be wary of online donating. You are always welcome to call the Development Department and provide your information over the phone. Also know that in the unlikely event that unauthorized use of your credit card occurs, Federal law limits your responsibility for unauthorized charges to U.S. $50.00. Your credit card provider should have reporting procedures in place if you see unauthorized transactions occur. Contact HFDH immediately if you see an unfamiliar transaction from the Day Home on your credit card statement.

How do I know if a Web site is secure?

Being vigilant with your Internet security is important. When making an online transaction, keep an eye out for these key items:

  • All data you transmit is strongly encrypted.
  • The site you're doing business with is the site you think it is.
  • The site you're doing business with processes your credit card information in a safe and responsible manner.

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), the industry-standard security protocol that the HFDH web site uses to communicate with secure browsers like Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer, takes care of the first two items. When communicating with a secure server like ours, these browsers encrypt the information you send in a way that is extremely difficult for anyone else to decode. You may be unsure whether your browser supports secure transactions or not. If your browser does not support it, you will not be able to complete your transaction. Look for a visual image that indicates a secure site (a lock icon to the left of the site’s URL in the address bar and the site’s URL address begins with https:// instead of http://).

Once HFDH receives your donation, we remove your credit card information from our servers. This data is not stored and, therefore, risk of it being stolen is removed from that point. Please note that your contact information, including your address, phone number and e-mail address is kept on file. HFDH makes every effort to keep your contact information confidential and secure. If you wish for this information to be removed from our database, please contact the Development Department.
